Hapkido

Hapkido History

Hapkido evolved in Korea in the middle of the twentieth century under the guidance of Grand Master Choi. It is a selective fusing of a wide range of existing martial arts skills from Tae Kwon Do, Judo, Aikido and modern Jujutsu. Hapkido is unique in that it integrates striking, avoiding & blocking, holding, throwing, weapon defenses, internal techniques (meditation, breathing, internal energy), and linear & circular movements.

Hapkido Philosophy

Hapkido is a complete, realistic and practical method of self defense for women & men, also known in Korea as a street self defense.

  • We teach all areas such as stand up & ground grappling, weapon defenses, multiple attack defenses, escapes and submissions so that you can defend yourself in practically every situation.
  • Hapkido is a potentially dangerous martial art so we require that all students be at least 18 years old or have received special instructor permission.

Hapkido Belt Testing

At OMAA, our Hapkido students progress with the following belts ranks:

  • White
  • White Stripe
  • Yellow
  • Yellow Stripe
  • Green
  • Green Stripe
  • Blue
  • Blue Stripe
  • Brown
  • Brown Stripe
  • Nominal Black Belt
  • Black Belt

We test every month, but only groups of belts test. For example:

Month 1 - White Stripe, Yellow, Yellow Stripe
Month 2 - Green, Green Stripe, Blue
Month 3 - Blue Stripe, Red, Red Stripe

So you will have the opportunity to test about every three months. Black Belts test on special times twice a year that are announced at the Training Center. Unlike Tae Kwon Do students who typically test the last Friday of every month, Hapkido Students test during their normal class time. To see a schedule of Hapkido classes, click here.
